Kankaan viimeistely / Finishing the fabric

Ompelin kankaaseen 5 x 5 senttimetrin neliöitä harsimalla: niiden avulla voidaan seurata kankaan kutistumista.
I marked 5 x 5 cm squares here and there in the fabric with basting stitches: they would help me control that the fabric was shrinking evenly.

The woven fabric is not ready yet. It needs to be finished. First, all then ends of the broken yarns are sewn in to the fabric. This part was easy since only three yarns broke during the weaving.

Wet fabric needs to be stretched tight for drying. In medieval times they had special frames for it, but this time a pallet was used. I covered it with sheet, since the surface of the pallet is quite rough and not so clean.

The fabric is finished by felting: it gets tighter and felts a bit. At home you can do it like this: take a big plastic tub - I used a babies' bath tub - and fill it with water. Tread fabric with your feet a short length of fabric at a time. This authentic medieval way is not safe when done in a modern bathroom floor in a plastic tub, by the way: the tub slides, so I had to settle for treading the fabric with one foot and both hands.

I treaded the fabric four times: twice in warm water, once in cold and once more in hot water.

Seurasin lankojen tiheyden muutoksia työn aikana. Pimeässä kylpyhuoneessa siihen tarvittiin apuvälineitä, kuten otsalamppu, mittanauha ja suurennuslasi.

I monitored the yarn count changes during the process. In a dark bathroom I needed some equipment, like a torch, a measuring tape and a magnifying glass.

Kuormalavan ympärille pingotettu kangas kuivui muutamassa päivässä.
The fabric stretched around the pallet dried nicely in a few days.

Kangas kutistui kuivuessaan noin kuusi senttiä leveydestä, 83 sentistä 77 senttiin. Pituussuunnassa kangas kutistui neljä senttiä metriltä eli 9,5 metriä kudottua kangasta oli kuivana 9,05 metriä.

The fabric shrunk 6 cm in width, from 83 cm to 77 cm. In length, it shrunk 4 cm per metre, so that 9,5 metres of freshly woven fabric was 9,05 metres when it was dry.
