Koekappale / The prototype

In medieval times tailors had no patterns, they had to know how to fit the clothes on the user. It often started with rectangular and triangular pieces. This same method was used on the Turku dress too.

I made the first test with Elina Sojonen. We cut the mock-up fabric to rectangular front and back pieces, and big triangles to side pieces. We started testing how and where the pleating would go.

Test: if the shoulder line fits, pleating the back piece the same way as the front would not work. It did not look good or plausible, but more like an empire style dress. I continued testing a few weeks later with Christine Carnie.

The front part started to find the shape I was hoping for and we figured where the pleating should start. The correct place is not the persons waist line, but the spot where upper body bends to the side.
We also noticed that if the shoulder line is fitted, the back can not be pleated all the way: the wool fabric will have much less pleats than thin cotton sheet.

Kankaan hulpiot olisivat etuosan keskisaumassa, kuten fragmenttissa TE 50429.
- Takakappaleessa on istuva hartialinja ja kappale levenee helmaa kohti. Takakappaleen leikkuusta yli jäävät kiilamaiset palat käytetään mekon helmassa antamaan lisää leveyttä. Takakappaleeseen tulee myös kaari kädentietä varten.
- Isot sivukiilat muotoillaan henkilön päällä. Myös niiden sivusta jää kiilapalat.

We made the cutting plan after this test:
- The front pieces will be straight, with shoulder straps and small curves for the armholes. They are cut so that the selvedges end up in the middle seam, like on the fragment TE 50429.
- The back piece will have a fitted shoulder line and it will flare out towards the hem. The small triangular shaped pieces that will be leftovers from the sides will work as extra gores to create a wider hemline. The back piece also has a curve to create the armhole.
- The side pieces are wide triangles which will be fitted on the person.

Prototyypin tein ostokankaasta. 150 cm leveän kankaan leikkasin kahtia, jotta työskentelyleveys olisi sama kuin kutomassani kankaassa.
I used industrial fabric for the prototype. I cut the 150 cm wide fabric in half so that I could work with a similar width as with my handwoven fabric.

The shape of the shoulder strap is not straight. Mine is 3 cm from the top, on the shoulder, and 9 cm from where the pleating starts. It will get narrower when the bodice is pleated.

Mallimekossa etuosaa on poimutettu 21 sentin matkalta. Poimutusta varten siihen merkittiin liidulla poimutusrivit sentin välein.
On the prototype the pleating of the bodice is 21 cm high. The lines for the gathering yarns are 1 cm apart. It means more work, but also gives a better result than sparse lines.

Olkaimen linjaa on hieman pudotettu.
Also the back piece gets the right shape by fitting it on the person. Notice that even if the shoulder strap is narrow, the line is not straight, because human shoulders are not straight either. The line is slightly lowered.

Takakappaleen sivusta jäävät palat voi muotoilla kiiloiksi puvun helmaan.
The pieces that are leftovers from cutting the back piece can be shaped as extra gores to widen the hemline.

The test fitting already gave a shape to the big side piece. Just to make sure, it can be cut straight and shaped again on the person.

Next step was finishing all the pieces. We used thin wool yarn, Wetterhof Veera, tex 55 x 2, and a colour that was quite close to the fabric's colour. Like in the fragment, I folded the edge and used overcast stitches to finish them.

Seuraavaksi poimutimme etu- ja takakappaleet. Kaikkiin kappaleisiin piirsimme 1 x 1 cm ruudukon.
Next thing to do was to sew the gathering yarns. We drew a 1 x 1 cm grid on the front and back pieces and tested how the pleats would look when sewn with 1 cm long stitches. Not good. So we resewed the whole grid with 0,5 cm stitches, pulled the gathering yarns and got pleats.

The width of the back piece pleating depends on how much extra fabric there is. The height of the front pleats define where the back pleats start and how high they are, since medieval times favoured symmetry. My prototype has a 21 cm high pleating in the back and it gets narrower in six steps.

Chrissie Carnie mittaamassa poimutusta. Avustaja Eikka tarkkaili laatua.
Chrissie Carnie measured that the pleating was even. She had an assistant, Eikka.

Poimutuksen yläreuna on taitettu nurjalle.
The top of the pleating is folded inside.

Poimutus kiinnitettiin nurjalta puolelta takapistoin. Aivan samanlaista jälkeä kuin kuuluisassa norjalaisessa Uvdalin puvussa!
We secured the pleats from the reverse by sewing rows of back stitches. And it looks just like on the famous Norwegian Uvdal dress!

Ja niin se alkoi näyttää ihan esikuvaltaan!
And so it started to look like the original!

Now we were able to fit the dress and shape the side piece. Chrissie did the fitting, and the side piece had exactly the same shape as the first mock-up version.

Seuraavaksi Chrissie - tuo hihojen mestari - teki hihan kaavan.
Chrissie is the master of sleeves. To draw a sleeve, she uses measurements: arm length, widest part of the sleeve, elbow circumference, height of the elbow from the wrist, wrist circumferenceThis took her 15 minutes.

Vielä kiilakappale täydentämään kapeasta hihasta auki jäävä osa.
And then a sleeve gore to fill the gap the narrow sleeve shape leaves.

Fitting: the extra fabric on the seams is pinned and the sleeve is fitted to its place and size.

Seuraavaksi kaikki kappaleet saikin yhdistää: huolitellut reunat yhteen ja taas ompelin yliluottelemalla. Prototyypissä käytin ohutta, kankaan väristä villaa.
Next, it was time to join the pieces: I put the finished edges together and sewed with overcast stitch. For the prototype I used thin wool yarn which was very close to the colour of the fabric.

I noticed that despite the supportive stitches the pleats stretched. I got a good tip: shape them with steam. Even if the gathering yarns have not gathered the pleats evenly, miracles happen. Moist wool can be shaped easily. This is also a historically accurate way of treating pleats and still in use in the manufacture of Norwegian folk costumes.

Höyryttäminen kestää tunnin; sinä aikana villakuidun rakenne muuttuu niin, että jäähtynyt kuitu jää poimulle. Käytin 10 litran kattilaa, jossa keitin pientä määrää vettä keskilämmöllä. Käänsin höyrytettävää kappaletta ajoittain.
Steaming takes an hour. During that time the structure of the wool fibre changes so that the pleats stay in shape.

Tein mekon yläosaan vuorin suojaamaan poimutuksia ja ompelin pellavasuikaleet hihansuihin, joissa on pienet halkiot ja niissä kaksi nappia.
I lined the bodice part to protect the pleating and sewed linen strips to the cuffs that have small slits and two buttons.

Noin 20 tunnin ompelutyön tulos: etuosasta ja selästä poimutettu villainen mekko.
The result of about 20 hours of sewing: woolen dress with pleated bodice and back.
